Going into the season of Thanksgiving in the US – I am grateful to be a part of such a great church – both the Church of the Nazarene and the wider body of Christ. Recently Nazarene Compassionate Ministries approached us to help us apply for a USAID grant. For the grant we had to show how we were tied to a US organization with significant input into our work. The Church of the Nazarene is, of course international, but is headquartered in the US so this works for the grant. I thought I would share with you all what I learned as we gathered information for this grant.
Some of you may know that Kudjip Nazarene Hospital and Nazarene Health Ministries is not on any regular annual budget in the church for direct contributions to run our ministries, but we couldn’t do it without the church. People and churches contribute to World Evangelism Fund through paying budgets and special offerings. This pays for many of our missionaries salary and travels so in effect part of the regular budgets pay salaries to operate the hospital. Other missionaries are here who raise their own support through deputation services and giving of friends, families and churches. Missionaries also sometimes use their deputation accounts to help with special projects or raise money for those projects. Churches and individuals also contribute to our various projects. We nearly always have a current project on the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries website (www.ncm.org). We also always have some projects and needs listed on our website’s project page.
When you total up what the church has contributed to just our health ministries in PNG – through sending missionaries, special projects, donations, etc… (not including other things happening in PNG like gifts to missionaries, deputation funds used for church ministry or other missionary benefits, Bible College, etc…) – just our health ministry.. From 2009 to present in 2012 we have received over US$2.4 million for our ministry!
People not only give money but many people come to us through the church, Work and Witness, and other christian organizations (like many of our volunteer doctors who come through Samaritan’s Purse). We estimate almost 80,000 volunteer hours from 2006 until now! Considering this is mostly medical volunteers it represents millions of dollars more!
Add to this Dr. Todd Winter’s work though Nazarene Hospital Foundation (www.nazarenehospitalfoundation.org) has sent about $20million worth of medicine and equipment over the last 9 years and many churches and individuals send packages of medicines and supplies when we need them. This includes partnering with groups like Heart to Heart International and others.
It is really overwhelming to see how much we are loved and supported and how much our church believes in the Kingdom work we are doing here. So to all of you who pray, give, and go – Thank you!
